How to Best Clean Your Patio Chairs

Knowing the best way to go to clean your patio chairs has a lot to do with the kinds of patio chairs that you have. Here's a look at what you need to know before you start setting up your cleaning plans.

What type of chairs do you have?

Wicker Patio Chairs

Wicker patio chairs seem to be able to get dirty much easier than other patio chairs. Part of the reason for this is that these chairs are made of all those reeds woven together. Any dust and dirt that is airborne seems to find a new home between those reeds. Before you know it, your beautiful new pieces can be looking a little dingy and glum.

The good news is that wicker is a pretty easy type of patio chairs to clean. If you have a pressure washer (1200-1350 psi) you can use this as your main cleaning tool. Just add a little soap and water with the mixture and let it go! Make sure to use the lowest setting on the pressure cleaner though. You don't want to go overboard and rip your patio chairs apart.

If you don't have a pressure washer, that's not a problem, you can use a garden hose in the same manner, scrubbing in the soap and water mixture and then washing it clean.

After it's clean, let it fully dry. This could take a day or more.

Wood Patio Chairs

Wood is also pretty easy to clean in patio chairs. These can be cleaned with the same soap and water mixture that you would use on wicker chairs. In this case, you should use a clean cloth or soft brush to apply the soap and water then rinse it clean.

You want to make sure you get all the soap off of the furniture. While soap is a great cleaning tool, it can also discolor and damage your wood if it is allowed to dry on the patio chairs.

Next, make sure to let the wood fully dry. After it's dried, consider whether or not you need to offer any additional protection. There are plenty of wood sealers that can help your wood defend itself against dirt and dust.

Fabric Patio Chairs

Many fabric patio chairs come in a very convenient to clean way. They have zippers that allow you to take the covering off of the pillows or cushions and put them in the washing machine. This is a quick way to clean them up and make them look great again. If you don't have that option, you can use a sponge with soap and water to scrub away any dirt or spots on the fabric.

Metal Patio Chairs

If you have patio chairs made of iron, steel or aluminum, they are not difficult to clean. For the most part a soap and water mixture will do the trick. If you are near the beach or in an area where you think corrosion could be a threat to your furniture pieces, you may want to look for a wax to coat the pieces with that will help them avoid corroding.
